What Is It Like
The USA is one of the world’s leading financial centres with New York City being the major financial hub. It has a rich cultural diversity and unique attractions making it one of the biggest economies in the world.
The East Coast is generally characterised by New York which is known as the city which never sleeps. Its fast pace, frenetic activity where there is always something happening at any time of day or night provides for a very busy social and work life.
The West Coast, mainly San Francisco and Los Angeles (the home of Hollywood), has a reputation for a slightly slower pace with a greater emphasis placed on enjoying life outside of work primarily due to the sunnier climes.
Although currently suffering from a major credit crisis, opportunities are still available in the US making the country one of the favoured places still to live and work.
What is the cost of living
The cost of living depends on the location. In general food purchases can be quite reasonable, although there are a range of restaurants to choose from, both fancy and cheap local ones with prices to match. Transportation is readily available except in New York where knowing the art of whistling for a taxi can help!
Rents vary greatly depending on locality and may be quite expensive in places like New York. The average rent for high-end apartments are $1,750 a month for a studio; between $2,000 and $2,300 for a one-bedroom; $3,200 for a two-bedroom and $4,400 for a three-bedroom. As part of the standard rental policy, there are strict income requirements. This requires proof of an annual income of a minimum 40 to 50 times the monthly rent (i.e. $1,000 per month apartment would require an annual income of $40,000 to $50,000).
