What Would I Be Doing There

What type of lawyers are in demand

Lawyers from well-known international or Australian and New Zealand firms with a minimum of 3 years full time legal experience are sought after.

For those lawyers who have not completed two years of articles in the UK or the equivalent before qualifying to practice, a “discounting” or “equivalency” may be applied by overseas firms to determine their PQE (post qualification experience). This means that an individual’s overall full-time experience which can include time spent prior to formal admission to practice is reduced by 12 or 24 months depending on the person’s skills and background.

Those with transactional experience in the following areas are particularly in demand:

  • All areas of transactional banking and finance
  • Corporate
  • Capital Markets – debt and equity
  • Infrastructure Projects
  • Construction - mainly front end
  • Private Equity
  • Investment Funds
  • Superannuation/Pensions

Those with top end experience in the following areas may be considered by some firms however they are perceived as being less transferable:

  • Energy & Resources
  • Competition
  • Corporate Tax
  • Commercial Property
  • Insolvency/Restructuring
  • Information Technology
  • Intellectual Property
  • Insurance
  • Commercial Litigation
