What Is It Like
The Channel Islands comprises a group of islands in the English Channel which is in fact closer to France although only a one hour flight from London. These islands of British crown dependency comprise of the main islands of Sark, Alderney, Guernsey, Herm and Jersey. Jersey and Guernsey being the two largest islands have now become major offshore centres with island lifestyles. There are both British and French influences throughout the islands.
The Channel Islands is known for its slower and more relaxed pace with the social scene being more low key in comparison to the UK due to the small island communities. The lifestyle is quite family-oriented and more conducive to engaging in outdoor activities due to the warmer climes and the variety of landscapes ranging from the beach to country settings.
Everything is easily accessible. Wherever you live on the island, you will never be more than 20 or 30 minutes away from the office.
What is the cost of living
The cost of living in Jersey and Guernsey is equivalent to England in some respects however a person’s take home salary will generally be higher in the Channel Islands than compared to London due to the low tax environment.
Housing is the biggest expense item. Jersey rents for a 3 bed house range from about £15k pa to £24k pa, depending on location and quality. Private education is less costly than in the UK, and eating out is generally cheaper.
