What is It Like
The Caribbean islands are an island chain 4,020 kilometres (2,500 mi) long and no more than 257 kilometres (160 mi) wide at any given point. They enclose the Caribbean Sea and include 50 islands. These islands include Cayman and British Virgin Islands (BVI). The white sandy beaches and warm waters are perfect for those who want a holiday lifestyle all year in this laid back environment however the low key social scene in a small island community may not suit those who are used to the bright city lights.
Although Bermuda is not considered a part of the Caribbean, the lifestyle is very similar to the Cayman Island.
What is the cost of living
The cost of living in Cayman Islands is generally higher than in the United States or the United Kingdom, as most commodities are imported and have to bear the cost of freight and insurance, plus customs duty if payable. This however may be offset by the absence of income and property taxes.
There are several grocery stores on the Island which offer a wide selection of fresh and packaged goods.
Having a car is really essential and although they have a good bus system, it is not a publicly run service.
The most significant expense for residents is accommodation rental. The cost of other goods and services is approximately 20% higher than most cities in the U.S. and Canada.
A modern fully furnished one-bedroom apartment can set you back the following:
- On the beach CI$1,500-2,500
- Off the beach CI$750-1,200
A modern fully furnished two-bedroom apartment can cost:
- On the beach CI$2,500-4,000+
- Off the beach CI$1,800-2,400+
Two- or three-bedroom fully furnished houses are priced accordingly:
- Off the beach CI$2,500-4,000+
Accommodation in the BVI is of a good quality and is cheaper than the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. A decent two bedroom flat will cost approximately US$2,000 per month, or approximately US$3,000 to US$3,500 per month for a three bedroom flat with a pool.
The cost of living in Bermuda is generally higher than BVI, North America and UK. It will cost at least US $4,800 a month in Bermuda. A 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment, cottage, condominium or duplex is at least $8,750 a month. A 3 or 4 bedroom comfortable (not luxurious) family house is now $15,000 to $22,000 per month. A reasonably well-paid expat with a spouse will spend on average between $8,000 to $12,000 per month on rent.
What is the weather like
These islands all have one thing in common and that is the tropical weather. In the Cayman Islands the most pleasant weather is winter which is from June to April. Rain and hurricane season runs from June to November.
What is the local currency
